AbstractArthur Ray's hypothesis concerning the effect of middleman trade on the archaeological record is evaluated using archaeological data from four Historicperiod Arikara sites in South Dakota - Sully, Phillips Ranch, Leavitt, and Leavenworth. The general validity of the hypothesis is supported, but is weakened if mortuary information is excluded. The addition of such data adds strength and reliability to the hypothesis.

AbstractThe Fort Towson sutler's store and residence existed on the eastern Oklahoma frontier between 1832 and 1854. To understand the relation of this site to Oklahoma's Antebellum frontier, a spatial perspective is developed which compares the Fort Towson sutler's store to other sites within eastern Oklahoma and to sites in other areas on the basis of the site's total artifact pattern and ceramic structure. Observed differences between eastern Oklahoma sites and those on the eastern seaboard, as reflected in total artifact frequencies, are explained by differentials in time and space. Analyses of ceramic patterning reveal a distinct spatial pattern in eastern Oklahoma that is felt to reflect not only differences in ceramic cost but also differentials in trade, transportation, and communication within the area during the Antebellum Period.

AbstractPrehistoric spatial data recovered from the John Martin Dam and Reservoir, Bent County, southeastern Colorado, was obtained from sites of the Archaic, Formative, and Buffalo Hunter stages of High Plains archaeology. These data, most of which dates to the last 3000 years, were analyzed in order to address four problem areas: (1) site function, (2) site-to-site networking, (3) past adaptive practices, and (4) evolutionary trends in the data. These problem domains were examined using such cluster and correlation statistics as: (1) an original Nearest Neighbor (NN) routine, (2) Z-coordinate cluster mapping, and (3) two computer program packages called NTSYS and SPSS.

Abstract14NT604 is a single-component Hell Gap Paleo-Indian site located near Norton in western Kansas. The site is interesting because it is associated with a quarry, and the study of its lithics is presented. The site would appear to be a limited-activity type in which quarrying and lithic tool manufacture occurred as did some wood and bone working. The site was probably a summer temporary campsite.
