This perspective focuses on the aldehyde C–H activation promoted by late transition metals, including the chelation-assisted reactions. The mechanisms currently accepted for different metal complexes, the reactivity of acyl hydrido species formed, and the reactions promoted on further aldehyde when using excess reagent are discussed. Homogeneous catalytic aldehyde decarbonylation or dimerization reactions are also reviewed.

The initial employment of α-benzoin oxime (bzoxH2) in metal cluster chemistry has provided access to a new family of decanuclear CuII complexes with a loop or single-strand wheel topology; the CuII10clusters are antiferromagnetically-coupled with an S = 0 spin ground state, as expected for even-membered loop arrays of CuII atoms.

The structural and spectroscopic properties of new heteroleptic iridium complexes having a biphenyl and two bipyridyl based ligands are reported; DFT calculations reveal that the HOMO is composed of the biphenyl and iridium d orbitals while the LUMO is localized mainly on the two bipyridyl based ligands.

The first carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) based on μ2-alkyne dicobalt(0)hexacarbonyl complexes are reported. The alkyne substituents significantly affect the rate of CO-release, cytotoxicity and cell viability. Mechanistic studies provide insight into the CO-RM activation pathways.

Novel glass/Fe3O4 core/shell composite hollow spheres with the shell layer assembled by multi-layered wafers were successfully synthesized by reduction of a glass/α-Fe2O3 precursor, which was obtained through a facile solvothermal process. The effects of some reaction parameters on the morphology of the shell layers and the magnetic properties of the products were investigated.
