I was enormously struck by the fact that there are two cultures in the academy today. There's the culture of the classroom and there's the culture of life outside the classroom, and these are enormously divided. The classroom culture has a clear academic goal and on many campuses the out‐of‐classroom experience has no guidance, little purpose, and often the climate can he described as Low‐grade decadence.
