Recently, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) has emerged as a therapeutic target of interest for non-small-cell lung cancer in humans. The role of HER2 in canine pulmonary adenocarcinomas is poorly documented. To address this gap, this study employed three methodologies: immunohistochemistry (IHC), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to investigate the protein expression, gene amplification, and mutation of HER2 in 19 canine primary pulmonary adenocarcinomas. By IHC, 3 out of 19 cases were overexpressed 3+, 6 were 2+, and 10 were negative. With FISH, 2 cases were amplified (12.5%), 3 were inadequate for the analyses, and the others were non-amplified. With NGS, seven cases were inadequate. All other cases were wild-type, except for one IHC 3+ case, which was amplified with FISH and with a specific mutation already described in human pulmonary adenocarcinoma, V659E. This mutation is probably sensitive to tyrosine kinase inhibitory drugs. These results are similar to those in human medicine and to the few data in the literature on canine lung carcinomas; the presence of 12.5% of amplified cases in dogs lays the foundation for future targeted drugs against HER2 alterations.

The Chinese striped-necked turtle Mauremys sinensis, introduced into South Korea presumably in 2012, is considered an invasive alien species owing to its devastating impact, including hybridization with the native protected species Reeves’ turtle M. reevesii. Recently, the presence of M. sinensis has been confirmed throughout the country, and several sympatric areas with M. reevesii have been reported. Thus, field surveys were conducted at 47 sites across M. sinensis and M. reevesii habitats in South Korea to determine the extent of hybridization. Five sympatric sites were confirmed, and hybrid individuals were identified at four sites. Genetic analyses (COI and R35) of two individuals from Jeju Island confirmed maternal M. reevesii and paternal M. sinensis lineages. Hybridization presumably does not occur under natural conditions, and the hybrids likely originated from captive breeding. This study identifies for the first time the habitats of M. sinensis and its hybrids in the wild of South Korea. The management measures proposed in the current study could be of value for the conservation of the native species; however, our study did not include reproductive monitoring, and there is a need for such surveys as well as for systematic management of non-native turtles introduced into South Korea.

Radioiodine therapy (RAIT) is the gold standard for treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the presence of uni- or bilateral thyroid adenoma on changes in total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and creatinine concentration over a period of 6 to 12 months following RAIT. Fifty-one hyperthyroid cats presented for RAIT between April 2021 and April 2022 were prospectively enrolled. Cats with an increased creatinine concentration (creatinine ≥ 140 µmol/L), renal morphology abnormalities, and suspected thyroid carcinoma were excluded. TT4, TSH, and creatinine were determined before and one week and one, three, six, and twelve months following RAIT. The effects of the re-examination timepoint following RAIT and the presence of uni- or bilateral thyroid adenoma based on technetium-99m scintigraphy on TT4, TSH, and creatinine were analysed by mixed effects modelling. Cats with bilateral adenoma had significantly higher TSH concentrations after RAIT compared to those with unilateral adenoma. TT4 concentration significantly decreased one week (p < 0.001) and again one month following RAIT (p < 0.001). TSH and creatinine concentration significantly increased one month post RAIT (both p < 0.001). As indicated by an increase in TSH concentration, the pituitary–thyroid axis needs a minimum of one month post RAIT to recover from hyperthyroidism-induced suppression, but hypothyroidism necessitating levothyroxine supplementation might not be diagnosed before 6 or even 12 months post RAIT. Although creatinine did not increase significantly after one month post RAIT in this cohort, an increased creatinine concentration was detected at later timepoints in individual cats.

Shear force is commonly used to evaluate tenderness, one of the most crucial eating quality aspects of sheep meat. The effect size of various factors on tenderness is still unknown. Studies have suggested that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the variation in meat tenderness, and there are possible interactions between these factors. An extensive data set (n = 23,696) was analyzed to examine genetic and non-genetic influences on the shear force at 5 days postmortem (SF5). SF5 was measured on lamb loins (Longissimus lumborum) taken from lambs reared over 12 years at eight sites across Australia. The results showed that all carcass traits had a significant (p < 0.001) impact on SF5, with the largest effect on SF5 associated with intramuscular fat (IMF %) (f = 1035). There was also a significant effect of sex, cold shortening at 18 °C, sire type and cohort on SF5 (p < 0.001), with a large variation observed between the minimum cohort at 15.9 ± 1.5 N and maximum at 51.2 ± 2.1 N. In conclusion, a complex matrix of production, processing and genetic factors impact lamb tenderness as measured by shear force. This experiment helps identify the size of the contribution of these factors towards lamb tenderness, enabling the sheep industry to enhance consumers’ satisfaction.

Recently, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Sphynx cats has been associated with a variant in the gene encoding Alström syndrome protein 1 (ALMS1). The primary aims of this study were to describe the prevalence of HCM in Sphynx cats in New Zealand, and to assess the association between HCM and the ALMS1 variant in this population. In this prospective study, 55 apparently healthy Sphynx cats from registered Sphynx breeders and pet owners in New Zealand were screened by a cardiologist. A total of 42 of these cats had a repeat cardiac examination after median 1.8 years (range: 1.6–2.2). The frequency of the ALMS1 variant was 70.9% (11 homozygous and 28 heterozygous). At the median age of 5.8 years (range: 2.4–13.1), the prevalence of HCM was 40% (20 out of 55 cats). Three cats with HCM died during the study with congestive heart failure. All three cats had focal but extensive myocardial ischemia or infarction at necropsy. The ALMS1 variant was not associated with the HCM diagnosis. In summary, HCM was common in the studied cohort, suggesting Sphynx cats are predisposed to this disease. While the ALMS1 variant was also frequently detected, it was not associated with HCM in this population.

The commensal Escherichia coli in the gut of pigs is a major reservoir of antimicrobial resistance and can result in possible transmission to humans through the food chain. Direct detection of E. coli from fecal samples is challenging and can be used as a bioindicator of antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to compare the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles in commensal E. coli from antibiotic- and nonantibiotic-using pig farms and developed the direct detection of ESBL genes in pig fecal samples using nested PCR (nPCR) and multiplex PCR (mPCR) techniques. All direct genotypic results were validated with the results of PCR sequencing of isolated E. coli colonies. The ESBL-producing E. coli were found in 98.6% (145 isolates) and 96.6% (144 isolates) of antibiotic-using and nonantibiotic-using farms, respectively, predominantly CTX-M-55. The nPCR decreased the limit of detection (LOD) from sPCR about 100 times, and the lower LODs of 102, 101, and 1 CFU/mL were reached after incubating samples in an enrichment medium for 2, 4, and 8 h, respectively. The mPCR, sPCR, and nPCR techniques showed sensitivities of 30.15%, 69.85%, and 91.91%, respectively, compared to PCR sequencing. The stability and recycling of ESBL genes were independent of antibiotic usage in commensal E. coli originating in pig farms.

Carvacrol is a compound present in essential oils with proven antimicrobial activity against numerous pathogens. We firstly determine the post-antibiotic effect (PAE) of carvacrol (1×, 2×, 4× MIC) and post-antibiotic sub-minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) effect (1× + 0.25× MIC and 2× + 0.25× MIC) for two concentrations of Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028 (106 and 108 CFU/mL). Prior to testing, the minimum concentration and exposure time to achieve the bacterial inhibition (MIC 0.6 mg/mL and 10 min) were determined by broth microdilution and time–kill curve methods, respectively. At the MIC, carvacrol did not generate any PAE. At twice the MIC, the PAE was 2 h with the standard inoculum (106 CFU/mL) and 1 h with the high-density inoculum (108 CFU/mL). At 4× MIC concentrations, the PAE was higher in both cases > 43.5 h. Continuous exposure of post-antibiotic phase bacteria (1× and 2× MIC) to carvacrol at 0.25× MIC (0.15 mg/mL) resulted in an increase in PAE (PA-SME) above 43.5 h with both inocula. These results suggest that the PA-SME of carvacrol for S. Typhimurium can be significantly prolonged by increasing the sub-MICs, which would allow dose spacing, reduce adverse effects and improve its efficacy in the treatment of infected animals and as a disinfectant in agri-food facilities.

Controversy surrounds the efficacy and welfare implications of different forms of dog training with several studies asserting that electronic shock collars have negative welfare impacts while not being more effective than non-aversive methods. However, these studies did not specify the schedule and intensity of punishment used or the effectiveness of the training method. In the current study, we attempted to train dogs across six sessions to desist from chasing a fast-moving lure in one of three randomly assigned conditions and then tested for retention and generalization in four further test trials. Group A was trained with e-collars; Group B was trained with non-aversive methods and the lure moving as with Group A; and Group C was trained as for Group B but with the lure initially moving slowly before its speed was progressively increased. All dogs in Group A stopped running towards the lure after one or two sessions, and none chased the lure in the first three tests: 67% of these dogs chased the lure in the final test in a novel arena. None of the dogs in the either Group B or C successfully refrained from chasing the moving lure in training or any test. Video behavior coding indicated few stress-related behaviors across the training groups.

This study investigated the effects of nutrient manipulation during the peripartum and suckling periods on the productivity of Hanwoo cows and their offspring. A total of 183 pregnant cows and their 180 offspring were randomly assigned to either a control group, fed a formula feed with 13.5% crude protein (CP) and 70.5% total digestible nutrients (TDN), or a treatment group, fed nutrient-enriched formula feed with 18.0% CP and 72.5% TDN. Offspring were similarly divided and fed either 17.0% CP and 69.5% TDN (control) or 21.5% CP and 72.5% TDN (treatment). Results showed that body weight recovery was higher in the treatment group, although wither height, body length, and body condition scores were similar between groups. The treatment group exhibited increased chest girth, reduced intervals for first return to estrus, and shorter days open compared to the control group. Plasma non-esterified fatty acids, albumin, and progesterone concentrations of Hanwoo cows varied between groups at the 3 months before and after calving. Offspring in the treatment group had higher body weight and average daily gain at birth, three and six months of age, with higher dry matter intake. These findings suggest that nutrient-enriched formula feed positively influences the reproductive efficiency of Hanwoo cows and the growth performance of their offspring.

A 6-year-old castrated male mixed dog presented with a rapidly growing mass at the right chest wall two weeks after initial detection. A mesenchymal origin of the malignancy was suspected based on fine-needle aspiration. Computed tomography (CT) revealed that the mass originated from the right chest wall and protruded externally (6.74 × 5.51 × 4.13 cm3) and internally (1.82 × 1.69 × 1.50 cm3). The patient revisited the hospital because of breathing difficulties. Radiography confirmed pleural effusion, and ultrasonography-guided thoracocentesis was performed. The effusion was hemorrhagic, and microscopic evaluation showed no malignant cells. Before surgery, CT without anesthesia was performed to evaluate the status of the patient. The 7–10th ribs were en bloc resected at a 3-cm margin dorsally and ventrally, and two ribs cranially and caudally from the mass. After recovering the collapsed right middle lobe of the lung due to compression from the internal mass with positive-pressure ventilation, a 3D-printed bone model contoured titanium mesh was tied to each covering rib and surrounding muscles using 2-0 blue nylon and closed routinely. The thoracic cavity was successfully reconstructed, and no flail chest was observed. The patient was histo-pathologically diagnosed with extraskeletal osteosarcoma. A CT scan performed 8 months after surgery showed no evident recurrence, metastasis, or implant failure. This is the first case report of chest wall reconstruction using titanium mesh in a dog. The use of a titanium mesh allows for the reconstruction of extensive chest wall defects, regardless of location, without major postoperative complications.
