The book covers the knowledge acquisition process and the systems development process in separate chapters and fails to demonstrate adequately the relationship between the two. Furthermore, the important subject of validation and verification is relegated to a short paragraph in the chapter on the organizational impact of knowledge-based systems, rather than being given the thorough coverage it deserves. A final criticism is that, for a highly detailed book covering a wide variety of subjects, an index of less than three pages is inadequate. To summarize, Soumitra Dutta's book clearly demonstrates the importance of capturing and automating organizational knowledge, and shows how it may be enhanced and dissemin- ated throughout an organization to contribute to corporate effectiveness.
