TY - JOUR AU - Rivas, Guillermo A. AB - The following is a study of the comparability of three language assessment instruments and their relationship to achievement tests. The purposes of the study were 1) to compare three oral language proficiency tests in terms of their language classification levels, and 2) to determine the relationship of the language categories defined by each test to standardized achievement test data. The data were collected during the Spring of 1980. Hispanic students in the first, third, and fifth grades in five school districts representing the Northern California Bay Area, Central Valley, Greater Los Angeles, and San Diego areas participated in this study. Students tested were those who had been previously identified for testing on the basis of California’s Home Language Survey. In all, over 1,100 students were tested in English on the Language Assessment Scale (LAS), Bilingual Syntax Measure (BSM), and the Basic Inventory of Natural Languages (BINL). School data in the form of academic achievement test scores, and school ratings of students’ language and achievement status were also collected. Results are discussed in terms of language test comparability and standardized achievement test data.
