Accordingly, Yudof proposes a theory of how government shoul behave d as a participant in the polit ­ ical debate. In essence, Yudofs ideal government is not unlike the professor who abjure s lecturing (an authoritarian practice) and debates with the student in s a manner that both arms them to disagree and treat them s with the respect due to equal, autonomous, rational persons. Indeed , respect for the intelligence and judgment of citizens, whether they de­ serve it or not, is the principle that unifies the author ’s many proposals for reform. Yudofs ideal government would not pretend to be imparti al or view all ideas as if they are of equal value; it would plunge into the politic proces al with s as much vigor as anyone else.
