Lee The economic growth of Korea has often been expressed as "The Miracle of the Han River" in comparison to the miracle of the Rhine River (West Germany) and the miracle of the Smida River (Iapan). Over the last two decades, Korea has achieved a truly remarkable economic growth. After World War II, Korea was one of the world's poorest countries, heavily dependent on agriculture and financially depen­ dent upon foreign sources. However, with strong government leadership, sound economic planning, and hard work on the part of her people, Korea has overcome her lack of natural resources and achieved a real annual growth rate of over 9% in GNP. Korea's annual manufacturing output growth rate has been nearly 20% and its export growth rate over 30%. Its per capita income in real terms rose 7.4% annually from only $126 in 1966 to over $2,000 in 1985.
