S A thoroughly sound text book, developed from notes which the Author prepared in 1945 and used for three years at Iowa State College in a course offered to senior and first-year graduate students. A t that time there was no modern text available specifically designed to s t a r t students off on a study of mathematical statistics. Since REVIEWS then the situation has been relieved considerably and the author states that if he had known what books were in the making it is likely that he would not have embarked upon his own. We can congratulate ourselves upon the Author’s ignorance, for his book contains many admirable features and is a useful addition to the growing list of statistical texts. The style is clear and lucid with penetrating and pungent comments from time to time.
