TY - JOUR AU - Hamsher, Caroline D. AB - This essay identifies four substantive features of contemporary rhetorical criticism. A set of theoretical propositions is developed suggesting that contemporary rhetorical theory views human communication as generic, axiological, strategic, and transactional. These descriptive claims support the conclusion that contemporary rhetorical theory and criticism is distinct from the Aristotelian, modern, and neo‐Aristotelian schools of rhetorical theory and criticism.
