AB - In an effort to improve and substantiate the empirical basis of the Fourth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual o Mental Disorders [DSM­ f IV; American Psychiatric Association (APA) 1994], the DSM-IV Task Force commissioned the review of literatures pertaining to a vast array of psycho­ logical disorders from a variety of perspectives. One hundred and fifty of these reviews are published as three of the five-volume DSM-N Sou rce Book (Widi­ ger et al 1994). Together with papers published since those reviews were completed, the sheer bulk of relevant scholarly material is prodigious and has made reviewing the literature on the diagnosis and classification of psychopa­ thology a formidable challenge. Although the empirical data base regarding the diagnosis of psychopathol­ ogy has increased greatly as a result of this activity, regrettably little attention was paid to the science of classification itself, in part because the Task Force accepted the obligation to conform the DSM-IV to the organization of the International Classification o Diseases.
