TY - JOUR AU - Rozeboom, William W. AB - American Educational Research Journal to hypotheses and subjected to empirical test. For example, the conditions of delay, denial, interruption, and distraction are said to encourage withdrawal. To what extent do these situations occur to children in their classroom day? At what points, and for what reason, do they occur? What are typical reactions of children? If "not caring" is a reaction, does it generalize to other activity? The chapter on teachers suggests research on conditions and motiva tional appeals that may influence teachers to plan more long- term educational strategy and less simple here-and-now reactive maintenance of classroom activity. Life in Classrooms is one of a number of recent books with a new educational look, a look that emphasizes direct classroom observation and development of concepts and hypotheses based upon inference from observation rather than inference from ex isting learning and other theories. As these contributions accu mulate, a descriptive theory of what we face in the educational enterprise may evolve. Jackson's contribution provides a needed stimulus toward such a theory.
