TY - JOUR AU - Thompson, Bruce AB - The present work had four purposes. First, some of the criticisms of contemporary practiceregarding the use of statistical tests are reviewed briefly; these concerns have been reflectedin a series of articles in the American Psychologist and in the appointment of an AmericanPsychological Association Task Force on Statistical Inference, which will considerrecommendations for improving the use of statistical significance tests. Second, a briefoverview of effect indices is presented. Third, related practices within seven volumes of anAPA division journal, School Psychology Quarterly, are reviewed; it was found that somecontemporary authors continue to use and interpret statistical significance testsinappropriately. Fourth, suggestions for improved practice are briefly explored.
