Boring, editor of Contemporary Psychology: A Journal of Reviews, is said to have instructed authors of book reviews to avoid the convention of sim- ply recapitulating the contents of the book’s chapters. Boring reiterated this po- sition in a letter thanking a reviewer for a “mature, well-integrated job that is anything but a catalogue of items about the book(s)” (letter from E. G. Boring to H. D. Kimmel dated January 27, 1961). Given that two reviews of The New Rules of Measurement book have already appeared in other publications (Linacre, 1999; Sireci, 2000), I will attempt to follow Boring’s advice. It is left to the reader to determine if Boring’s advice is sage or not and if this review meets his standard.
