TY - JOUR AU - Terrell, Glenn AB - Investigates the relationship between social role and academic achievement in college students. A sample of 28 males and 28 females were selected from a large sample of college sophomores and classified into 4 groups on the basis of their academic aptitude and academic performance. Analyses were made involving these Ss' desires to receive social and academic recognition, the certainty of their occupational choice, their self-sufficiency or social independence, and their persistence or self-control. Significant triple interactions of sex, performance, and ability occurred on measures of certainty of occupational choice and desire to receive social recognition; sex interacted significantly with performance on the measure of self-control. Social group dependence related negatively to academic performance among males but not among females. Differences between males and females in the variables relating to their academic performance were interpreted as due to differences in their prescribed social roles.
