TY - JOUR AU1 - Pike, Alison AU2 - McGuire, Shirley AU3 - Hetherington, E. Mavis AU4 - Reiss, David AU5 - Plomin, Robert AB - Measures of familyenvironment often show substantial differences between children in the same family and arethus nonshared environment candidates. A key question is whether differential environmentsare related to differential outcomes when genetic differences between children in the samefamily are controlled. Parent and child reports and observations of family interactionswere used to assess familial negativity and adolescents’ depressive symptoms andantisocial behavior in a genetically informative sample of 719 same-sex sibling pairsranging from 10 to 18 years old. Analyses revealed that parental and sibling negativity issignificantly related to adolescent adjustment through nonshared environmental processes, although genetic factors account for most of the association between parental negativityand adolescent adjustment.
