TY - JOUR AU - Ledvinka, James AB - The interviews given job‐seekers by the state employment service of a large midwestern city were examined. Each of 75 black job‐seekers was interviewed once by a black interviewer and once by a white interviewer, with race‐order of interviewers counterbalanced. On six measures of language elaboration, black interviewers elicited more elaboration from the black job‐seekers than did white interviewers. Four of the interviewer‐race differences were statistically significant (p < .05); however, an experimental bias casts doubt on one of those four. Explanations and implications are offered, and directions are suggested for further research.
