Its sole product is research and development of electronic devices, and the essential core of its productive departments is the engineer. Its customers, primarily the government, bring complex problems to the company for conversion into physical devices for use in defense. It does no manufacturing as such, simply carrying the project from the stage of mathematical and physical principle to a working model complete with technical drawings and operating manual. It has grown from a small group to a 300 employee corporation in eight years. The officers and directors are, with one or two exceptions, engineers. 236 The Problem GEORGE S. OMORNE The problems confronting the management were principally personnel problems. Normal dislocation resulting from its rapid growth manifested itself in a certain amount of conflict and confusion in the lower echelons. Additional complications resulted from a lack of mutual understanding, and a lack of cooperation among certain key groups.
