A History of their Modern Growth, with a Response by Tomohei Chida and Peter N. Davies Dealing with this work has proved an exciting experience. At one level the authors have provided the best account of modern Japanese shipping which I have read to date, and in a clear and incisive way laid bare the bones of an important facet of a remarkable period in Japan's economic history. From a purely selfish point of view, however, the book provoked numerous comparisons with the history and fate of Indian shipping and shipbuilding during the period to the end of the Second World War, and the changing patterns, which were directly linked to the growth of the Japanese shipping industry, of India's seaborne trade during this same era. If anything, the authors play down the remarkable achievement of the Japanese in creating a shipping industry de novo in the wake of the Meiji Restoration and two centuries during which Japan turned its back on the high seas.
