TY - JOUR AU - Anastasi, Anne AB - Discusses whether tests measure ability or the effectiveness of coaching. The effects of coaching have important implications for the validity of testing and are thus the focus of much current research and discussion. According to the author, these efforts are characterized by confusion and controversy for at least 3 reasons: misconceptions about the nature of tests, the broad range of training activities covered by the term "coaching," and methodological problems in studies on coaching. By defining and distinguishing among the varieties of tests, the varieties of coaching, and the different methodologies of coaching research, the issue of coaching and its effects are addressed.
