TY - JOUR AU - Davidson, Susannah AB - INTRODUCTION have been many papers written about school phobia, its symptomatology, social background and the personalities involved, but less has been said about its treatment, though for many of us that is a very pressing problem. The type of treatment must depend on how one views the underlying cause. I base my views on a study of thirty cases, seen mostly at the Ilford Child Guidance Clinic, and a few at the Child Guidance Training Centre, London. My material is derived from social histories, supplemented and revised in many cases from later interviews, and the treatment notes of cases seen once weekly, but a few twice-weekly for some of the time. Twenty-five cases were taken on for treatment, but in two cases the mother alone attended. School phobia is of course a symptom, not a diagnosis; but I hope to show that there is a constant pattern, a constant association of factors, which give rise in conjunction to the condition we call 'school phobia'. I will briefly summarize what I think is the generally accepted picture of this condition, with which my own cases are fully in agreement, before drawing attention to certain specific points.
