Since an asymetrlcal relationship between intervals on the test score scale and intervals on the underlying characteristic is a symptom of faulty test construction, efforts to solve the problem involve the improvement of test construction techniques. One of the problems we presently face is that of generalized tests; we tend to develop tests with too much utility.
