TY - JOUR AU - Donovick, Peter J. AB - Localized lesions were produced in anteromedial, middle, and posterior regions of the septum in 60 Holtzman albino rats. Anteromedial lesions restricted to the medial septal nucleus and dorsal part of the diagonal band blocked hippocampal theta EEG activity and differentially impaired discrimination-reversal and spatial-alternation performance. Middle septal lesions impaired spatial alternation to a lesser degree. All septal lesions facilitated acquisition of shock-avoidance behavior in the 2-way shuttle box and increased reactivity to light. These results suggest some degree of dissociation between septal dysfunctions expressed in avoidance behavior and discrimination-reversal performance. The latter depends on disruption of septohippocampal pathways involved in the elaboration of hippocampal theta EEG activity. (15 ref.)
