Ho wever, w hether s uch mechanisms ar e in fact prod ucing high levels of pe rformance is rather questionable. R ecog- nizing the i mportance of Ho ng Kon g in dustry r emaining competitive the govern ment launched a quality awareness c ampaign in March 1990. With almost 90% of H ong Ko ng’ s manufactured good s de stined for export, this was a very timely and p roactive move by the government. The campaign seems to hav e gathered momentum an d as at January 1997 about 1000 companies had been aw arded ISO 9000 certi® cates. Ab out ano ther 300 applications are being processed.
