AB - [The term “ecosystem”, introduced by Arthur G. Tansley in his epoch-making article of 1935, has provided us with a useful and promising concept to be applied for investigative understanding and solving the growing environmental problems of the twenty-first century. For both institutions and persons bearing responsibility for a sustainable development, usage of “ecosystem management” and “ecosystem services” has become their common language and means of communication. The “Millennium Ecosystem Assessment” launched by the United Nations at the turn of the millennia (MEA 2003) will further strengthen general attention for that rather abstract term and turn it into a self-evident component of the twenty-first century’s everyday publicity.]
