TY - JOUR AU - Campbell, Donald K. AB - Goal-setting researchers have begun to examine the connections between dif- ficult goals and the development of task-performance strategies (TPSs) for complex tasks. Currently, a well-defined conceptual framework into which these findings can be placed is not available. This article is an initial attempt to build such a framework. The review: (a) distinguishes between several dif- ferent definitions of TPS; (b) develops a task-performance model to identify how a performance shortfall could influence TPS identification, selection, or implementation; (c) examines the impact of different kinds of complexity on strategy characteristics; and (d) concludes with a consideration of future re- search needs.
