TY - JOUR AU - Bath, Dorinda AB - In this book, which is the latest volume in the series ‘‘Studies in language disability and remediation”, John Edwards considers the problems of disadvantaged speakers from a sociolinguistic viewpoint and sets out to examine the relevant issues, in the hope that by doing s 0 “ a picture of disadvantaged language Wll emerge which reflects reasonably well the current state of research and theory,” (p. xii). This 1s undoubtedly a mammoth task since many areas of research are involved and each of these has its own vast literature. n u s in order to provide a balanced overview a short account 1s given of many subjects and a comprehensive bibliography is included for those wishing to explore certain issues further. Instead of starting with language per se the author devotes the first chapter of his book to a critical evaluation of some theoretical models of disadvantage and attempts to answer questions such as, for example, Is there a genetic basis for disadvantage? Is disadvantage a product of environmental deprivation? The discussion leads to the conclusion that while disadvantage can be clearly seen as an environmental product, the most appropriate viewpoint is one of difference.
