NEVILLE POSTLETHWAITE, 1985 Oxford, Pergamon Press Recently an Oxford librarian bought for £10 the ten-volume International Encyclope- dia of Higher Education (Editor-in-Chief: Ada S. Knowles) published in 1977 (with a second printing in 1978) and originally sold for some £300. Such is the life expectancy of an encyclopedia which deals with themes that need constant updating in order to be of unquestioned value to the user. Knowles's work undoubtedly remains, however, a most useful source of reference to the student of higher education. Despite the seemingly unattractive prospect, as far as publishers are concerned, of a comparatively short shelf-life for a work that has taken a long time to produce and which has been technically complex, and no doubt very expensive, in production, there are still publishers willing to make the grand gesture.
