Eva Chen f you work in a small, high-technology company you are probably not involved in Total Quality Management (TQM). I The managements of most of these companies have avoided TQM because they believe it is too bureaucratic, complex, and expensive. They fear that TQM may stille creativity and initiative and reduce the ability of the organization to react quickly. Not only are these perceptions incorrect, but if a small, high-technology company wants to obtain long-term viability, the adoption of TQM is essential. All companies are facing increasing competitive pressures. I Many large companies have recognized the important contribution TQM can make in dealing with these pressures; however, the TQM systems implemented by these companies are not well suited to small companies unless certain changes are made. The TQM system can be tailored to adapt to the needs of small companies in a practical, applied manner. What Is Total Quality Management? TQM is a management system, not a series of programs.
