TY - JOUR AU - GUILFORD, J. P. AB - The preceding article by Richards is worthy of note for at least two reasons. Positively, it has verified the tendency for triangular scatter plots in relations of scores from divergent-production tests to scores from cognition tests in an adult population, apparently for the first time. For the first time, also, it has reported some triangular plots between scores reflecting originality in relation to scores representing fluency. The latter finding calls for further speculation and investigation. Of immediate concern in this note is Richards' conclusion that the extent of correlations among tests of divergent-production abilities justifies the belief in a single unitary creative aptitude. Her conclusion was based in large part upon intercorrelations among five tests that had been developed in the Aptitudes Research Project at the University of Southern California. These tests are: 1. Consequences (obvious), scored in terms of the number of direct or clearly apparent consequences given by the examinee to some hypothetical events, is a measure of an ability known as divergent production of semantic units (DMU), or fluency of ideas. 2. Consequences (remote), scored for number of indirect or far-reaching consequences, is a measure of divergent production of semantic transformations (DMT).
