INTRODUCTION Over the period of about 30 years during which the Strong Vocational Interest Blank has been in use, a large amount of information has accumu- lated around it (3). We know that the patterns of likes and dislikes that the scores represent are remarkably stable, that they are closely related to occupational choices and satisfaction, and that they are identifiable in most individuals at least by late adolescence. There have been a number of at- tempts to relate these characteristics to other aspects of personality. The clarification of such relationships is the purpose behind the present research. It seems possible that if we can discover how patterns of likes and dislikes originate during childhood years, it will help us to explain what they mean in adults. A longitudinal study is in progress, in the course of which children who were given a battery of tests during their first school year (6-7 age level) are being retested at approximately three-year inter- vals, using techniques appropriate for TI - The Development of “Vocational Interests”: I.
