TY - JOUR AU - Stangor, Charles AB - The author reviews the current state of empirical and theoretical approaches to the issue of stereotype accuracy. This review has led him to question the utility of an approach that is based primarily on assessing the content accuracy of social stereotypes. Although it is the theme of this book that there is merit to assessing group differences and the perceptions of those differences, the author does not believe that this approach will be highly productive in terms of producing a better understanding of the causes or consequences of stereotyping. In addition, he believes this study could also have negative social consequences if readers of pertinent research interpret conclusions to indicate that stereotypes are by and large accurate and, thus, generally appropriate to use. Furthermore, he believes that a focus on content may distract from other, more important, questions regarding issues of stereotypes and stereotyping.
