TY - JOUR AU - Crawford, Lyall AB - This essay, based on field research, uses a thematic approach and the stories of specific individuals to describe and interpret the manner of living in a small, contemporary commune. Three themes are explored: the commune's therapeutic norm; the encouragement of confrontational communicating; and the nature of commitment as enacted in this particular social setting. The failure of the commune to realize the aspirations of its co‐founder and leader, Tao‐jen, is explained, in part, by narrating the personal stories of prominent commune members and the public story of their struggles to live together as a community.
