D'SOUZA AND RAJ MOHINI SETHI Panjab University, Chandigarh BJECTIVES Kinship and caste have been the important bases of social organi- zation in the pre-industrial society of India. But ever since the impact of industrialization in all its facets of science, technology, and industry, and the concomitant changes in the social, political, and economic variables, the social structure of the Indian society has begun to alter in a fundamental manner. One of the major outcomes of this change is the diminishing importance of kinship and caste as the bases of social organization and the growing importance of social class in their stead (the mode of transforma - tion of caste into class is discussed in D'Souza 1967: 192-211). This is clearly noticeable in the planned city of Chandigarh in which social organization and behaviour become better understandable when analysed in terms of class system rather than of kinship and caste systems (D'Souza 1968). While such a phenomenon can be taken for granted in the highly modernised Western societies, it needs verification in a transitional society such as that of India.
