TY - JOUR AU - Greene, Margaret C. L. AB - THIS paper is concerned with a particular group of children who comprehend speech but do not speak and may appear mentally retarded at three years. They are not deaf, nor have they an auditory speech agnosia, they are not physically handicapped, nor are they autistic. They are widely believed to be slow developers, just “backward”, and that they will speak in time, by four or five. Sufficient numbers of them do so to make a good case for doing nothing for them. It is enough for paediatricians and doctors to assure the parents that nothing can be done now, that they must wait until the child talks. All the parents need to do is to talk to the child a great deal, “provide a stimulating verbal environment”, in the jargon. Not all mothers and fathers are happy about this and not all mothers know how to talk to the child and need to be shown. Often they buy and read books to the backward child who cannot make head nor tail of the written language and refuses to listen. Mother decides to sit the child in front of the television to watch and listen.
