This book is a comprehensive survey of the types of non-profit organisations in Asia, Africa and Latin America that engage in the promotion of socio-economic development among the poor. The author describes it as an 'appreciative inquiry" and is very positive in her assessments of the contribution to development these non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are making. This is the first of ~wo volumes the author is writing. This volume, in the author's words, 'focuses on those NGOs with the greatest potential impact on sustainable development'. The second volume, to appear later, will 'focus on the relationship between NGOs and governments, their potential impact on political development, and their relationships with foreign donors' (p.xii). This first volume has many strengths. The author has read and digested a vast amount of published material from all over the world on NGOs in third-world development. The bibliography is 25 pages long, and this alone is worth the price of the book.
