ALPER Discoveries are largely a function of the methods used. -Santiago Ramon y Cajal veryone knows that Mikhail Baryshnikov is a dancer, choreographer, E and actor and that he makes a living in both the private not-for-profit sec- tor (American Ballet Theatre) and in the commercial world of Hollywood (White Nights). It is quite possible that he makes money from endorsements as well as other nonarts sources. There is even a strong probability that he would be classified as self-employed in the U.S. Census. Yet the common per- ception of most performing artists in the United States is that they fall into one employment category or another, that their earnings do likewise, and that there is little movement to and from the sectors. Existing methods of data col- lection and presentation tend to reinforce that perspective. Although Baryshnikov may be unlike most performing artists in terms of total dollars earned, his career pattern of multiple artistic and earnings crossover experi- ences may be far more representative of the average performing artist than was formerly understood.
