TY - JOUR AU - Hyland, Michael E. AB - Motivational control theory is a meta-theoretic framework that differs from conventional theories of motivation by being at a more fundamental level of description. Motivational control theory is described and then used as a framework to compare Atkinson's theory, goal-setting theory, Weiner's attributional theory, and Deci and Ryan's theory of intrinsic motivation. The analysis shows that these different theories focus on different aspects of a single underlying process. Behavior is explained in terms of either variation in the amount of energy invested in a few named goals, variation in the nature of the goals themselves, or variation in the organization of goals. A suggested integration between different research programs provides a more complete picture of motivational processes.
