FISKE The University of Chicago INTRA-INDIVIDUAL variability refers to the change over time in the responses of an individual under certain conditions. Of the three kinds of such variability which have been noted b), this paper is concerned with Type I, which is “the dif- ference between the two responses of an individual at two points in time under the following conditions: (a) the individ- ual is exposed each time to the same stimulus or to objectively indistinguishable stimuli, (b) the total situation in which the responses are made is the same on both occasions 0, p. 217).” It assumes that the responses do not show a systematic trend over time as in learning, fatigue, etc. In the traditional psy- chometric theory this variability has been treated as unre- liability of the individual (2, p. 9; 12, p. 73) and has usually been assigned to error variance. The main problem of this study was to show that such variability is a lawful phenom- enon. Problem Typically the data of intra-individual variability are de- rived from the responses of the same TI - Intra-Individual Variability as Related to Test Score and Item12 JF - Educational and Psychological Measurement DO - 10.1177/001316445601600101 DA - 1956-03-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/sage/intra-individual-variability-as-related-to-test-score-and-item12-NTCrXRSY73 SP - 3 EP - 12 VL - 16 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
