With respect to the latter, his discussions both of the setting of the political agenda and the cooptation of public functions by corporations reveal his ability to incorporate into his own thinking telling points made by others. Two chapters bear special mention. Starting from the proposition that many of the effects that are ascribed to democratic pluralism reflect American scholars' concentration on the American case, Dahl undertakes a brief cross -national survey in Chapter 4. Focus­ ing on differences among polities with respect to the nature of social conflict, the struc­ ture of political institutions, and the character of the autonomous organizations them­ selves, he conclud es that certain of the peculiarities of American politics-most notably the absence of a socialist alternative- cannot justifiably be attributed to the vigor of the organizational pluralism in the American context.
