We are particularly interested in the relationship between the production of value “at work” and the social reproduction of labor-power along with the conditions that enable its deployment. Consider these three vignettes of contemporary life: A man strolls quickly through the airport. He is dressed in a business suit and carries a computer and a cup of coffee. He wears a headset. As he walks, he discusses plans involving the future direction of his company. At the baggage claim, the baggage cart reads: “I am your idea. Push me.” Above him on the wall is the image of a corporate man, dressed much as he is. The advertisement reads: “You are the office.”1 A woman is talking on the phone. While she talks she is moving through the kitchen, cooking dinner, setting the table, and washing her children’s hands.
