Culture is the internal set of operating standards and values that shape behavior and determine how peo- ple operate, communicate, and interpret the actions of others (Bennett, 1986, Mezirow, 1985; Prewitt Diaz, 1983). Designing for Diversity Cultural Inclusion in School Success From an educational perspective, cul- ture can influence the way in which a class is formatted, the way in which a Capitalizing on Culture needs assessment is conducted, and the judgments made about those who are economically, socially, and physically different from us. Culture influences every aspect of what we do. The very es- DIANE BUCK BRISCOE sence of who we are is shaped by the culture we embrace. Individuals within the culture that predominates rarely reflect on the choices that are required to function ef- fectively within the cultural main- stream. For those in the dominant cul- ture, traditional practices are simply commonsense assumptions about what is best, right, and good. Often, percep- tions of reality are based on these as- sumptions.
