TY - JOUR AU1 - Wilkins, Leslie T. AB - 462 .Reviews of Statistical and Economic Books [Part IV, sense of security with no real understanding of the subject-just the result the author wishes to avoid. The statistical techniques described include tests for differences between proportions and means, analysis of variance in a one-way classification, the z2-test and a purely descriptive treatment of linear correlation. There are many exercises given for the student to work out, and the author has collected a number of interesting sets of data as subject material. Even here, however, there is carelessness in the way some tabular statements are set out, setting a bad example to the student. On p. 147 number of years' teaching experience is classified (with no explanation) into groups 0-3, 4-7, 8-11 and so on. This is rather a surprising lapse by the author, in view of his idio syncrasy for using class intervals for all distributions, even of such variables as the number shown on throwing a die which (p. 45) is assigned class intervals O· 5-1 . 5, I· 5-2' 5, etc. Suffice it to comment that this procedure does not appear remarkable in the setting provided by the text of this book.
