TY - JOUR AU - Madge, Clare AB - The potential of the Internet as a valuable methodological tool for socialscience research is increasingly being recognised. This paper contributes to thedebate surrounding virtual synchronous interviews and the value of onlineresearch. Specifically it introduces the use of a software conferencingtechnique - Hotline Connect - and discusses the implications of using thetechnique for Internet- based research. In particular issues of interviewdesign, developing rapport, the role of insiders and outsiders in the researchprocess, language use and the virtual interface are considered. The paper drawson the experience of a recent research project entitled ‘Cyberparents’ andconcludes that the use of conferencing software holds great potential forsynchronous online interviewing. However, this must be combined with sensitive, ethical handling of both the research process and the data to overcome both theweaknesses of this particular method and those inherent in any interviewingsituation.
