Although the human quest to understand the meaning of life has been pervasive throughout time, it has been a topic that has skirted around the edges of numerous different disciplines without ever being fully adopted for scientific investigation by any one of these. The reason for this, at least in part, is that many consider the topic to be highly personalised and nebulous and therefore resistant to scientific inquiry. Subsequently the study of what makes life meaningful has received very little scholarly attention until more recent decades. What this book demonstrates is that the number of scholars devoted to the scientific investiga- tion of meaning is rapidly expanding and the depth in which they are now researching the topic is impressive. It is evident from the 28 chapters in this book that life meaning is a complex topic. First it is multidimensional, with the two most salient distinctions being between situational and existential meaning.
