AB - Identifies the significant role of conceptual research methods intheory building and contrasts it with the theorytesting researchcurrently prevalent in operations management. The research stages ofdescription, explanation and testing are used to distinguish betweentheory building and theory testing. Shortcircuiting any one of thesestages results in dysfunctional research activities which produce warstories, black boxes, or ivorytower prescriptions. Defines some termsrelevant to conceptual research methods and describes differentconceptual classification schemes. Finally, discusses the differencesbetween conceptual models, frameworks, and theories and illustrates eachmethod with examples from the literature.
