However, those with a professional or leisure interest in artificial intelligence (A . I . ) or cybernetics will, in my opinion, find the material stimulating and thought- provoking, and the rest of this review is aimed at such people. The book is a revised version of a report originally produced for the United States Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories and sets out a theory of the brain's function based on the postulate that each individual neuron in the brain is a hedonist: it thus 'seeks' excitation (one of the two classes of input it receives) and 'avoids' inhibition (the other).
