WARSHAW Department of Marketing Drexel University ROGER CALANTONE Department of Marketing University of Kentucky MARY JOYCE Department of Marketing University of Central Florida THE FISHBEIN AND AJZEN (1975; Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980) intention model has been used to investigate many important behaviors, including blood donation (Bagozzi, 1981; Burnkrant & Page, 1982). Small samples and/or student subjects have typically been employed, reducing confidence in the external validity of published findings. The present study was a field in- vestigation of blood donation among 758 American residents of central Flor- ida who mailed back a questionnaire sent to them under the auspices of the executive director of the regional blood bank; 1,608 questionnaires were mailed out. The questionnaire included items that targeted each major vari- able in Fishbein and Ajzen’s model: behavioral intention (BI), attitude toward performing (AB), and social norm toward performing (SN) behavior. All var- iables were measured by questions worded in the manner recommended by Ajzen and Fishbein and pertained to subjects’ donating blood within the next 2 months.
