TY - JOUR AU - McNulty, John L. AB - In this chapter, we introduce the practitioner to an MMPI-2 tool for personality assessment: the Personality Psychopathology Five (PSY-5) scales. The PSY-5 scales tap broad personality traits that influence normal functioning and color clinical problems. The PSY-5 scales provide the MMPI-2 user with "one-stop shopping" for an overview of personality traits. The primary focus of this chapter is to show how PSY-5 scores provide ideas for therapy. For good therapy, we want to promote strong and healthy treatment alliances. We want to maximize the possibility of successful outcomes while minimizing pain, discomfort, and negative effects. We want to enable treatment compliance and motivate energetic patient efforts to succeed. Personality information can help clinicians do all of this. For each significant PSY-5 scale result, we suggest how to structure the alliance, we alert the clinician to potential patient vulnerabilities and life patterns, and we offer ideas on reasonable therapeutic goals. Although most of this chapter is about applying the PSY-5 to therapy, we do provide a brief introduction to the development and psychometric properties of the MMPI-2 PSY-5 scales. PSY-5 users, in addition to being competent in the use of the MMPI-2, should at minimum have read the PSY-5 test report published by the University of Minnesota Press.
