His varied experience over the years as a writing teacher, assessment developer, and researcher form the basis for his book, leaching and Assessing Writing. Its title announces its task: to bring together the perspectives of those who teach and those who assess writing. White recognizes the difficulty in his opening sentence: "Most of those who teach writing in America dislike and distrust testing." White provides what he promises in at least one way: he personally embodies the joining of those functions. Unfortunately, the book does not measure up to its goals. What it does achieve is, however, significant and powerful. White describes his plan for the book as follows: chapters 1-5, theory behind teaching and assessing writing; chapters 6-10, practical applications; and chapters 11-13, overviews of major issues in teaching and assessing writing.
